Why Are My Requests Ignored?

Q.  Our company has gone to laptop computers, connected by satellite, work can be added and removed at random. We have a schedule that says our hours are 8:00 - 4.:30, yet you always have more than you can handle. Overtime pay is paid for anything beyond 40 hours per week. My only request is to get off by 5:30, two nights a week to attend church. My request to the "routing" office goes ignored. Am I asking too much? And how should I peruse this?

Signed,

Ignored!

A.  Dear Ignored:

Are you telling me that you have stood in front of someone's desk and asked a question yet they sit there and do not respond? You must have made someone very angry if they would ignore you in person.

Step One: It sounds like you haven't met with anyone face to face on the matter yet because you only mentioned inanimate objects in your question (the "schedule says," the "routing office ignores"). Meet with some other humans on the matter such as your boss or someone in personnel.

Step Two: If in fact the "routing" office is encased behind brick and stone and "it" really does ignore you, I suggest quitting at 4:30 to get to church on time. You would not be defying anyone since your schedule already stipulates 4:30 as quittin' time. If you make someone angry by doing this, at least you will not be ignored anymore and will have a definite answer to your question. If you really have too much work to handle on a church night, break out the laptop and finish later in the evening.

Step Three: If the routing office continues to ignore you (step one) and no one notices or cares that you leave at 4:30 (step two), start slipping out earlier each day until you are working zero hours and no one is noticing. Those are the best jobs, right? Just kidding!

WEGO know with a little assertiveness we won't be ignored for long.
