My Boss Won't Speak To Me!

Q. A co-worker has told my boss about something I said when reading email over my shoulder. What he said was true, but he only told part of the story - not the entire situation and this made me look bad. My boss started screaming at me and called me a "conniving bitch" and said he didn't believe a single word that I said.

Two weeks later, he placed a written warning in my personnel file stating these half-truths. I like my job and my boss and want to continue working here. I've tried to discuss the situation with him and he refuses to do so. It's affecting my work, as my boss won't even answer my work-related questions now. Any suggestions on how to improve this situation?

A. Dear Stonewalled:

Have you put in writing your side of the story? Make it succinct and ask your boss to add it to your file. Then forget about it, and be sure not to repeat the kind of behavior that provoked the irate reaction to what you did. When the oral channel does not work, try the written.

Now just do your job with as much energy and smarts as you can muster. If the boss does not respond to your questions, do what you think is what should be done. Find ways to earn back the goodwill you had before the incident. Time often heals breaches in working relationships.

WEGO learns from misunderstandings and "half-truths". Do let us know what transpires. It can help others in like situations.
